Your First Dive Charter Experience: What to Expect & How to Prepare

Jumping on your first dive charter is the beginning of an unforgettable adventure. From exploring colorful nudibranchs to meeting fellow ocean lovers, dive charters offer unique access to some of the most exciting underwater ecosystems. Whether you're newly certified or just scuba-curious, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know for your first dive charter—from booking to surfacing.

🐠 What Is a Dive Charter?

A dive charter is a boat-based scuba diving trip operated by a professional crew. These trips take you to dive sites that are often unreachable from shore, including wrecks, reefs, and marine sanctuaries. Dive charters cater to both beginners and experienced divers and may accommodate small private groups or larger dive parties.

It's also a great way to meet other divers and share your love of the ocean.

🗓️ How to Prepare for Your First Dive Charter

✅ Research the Dive Operator

Look for operators with:

  • High safety ratings

  • USCG-inspected vessels (in the U.S.) for additional safety and compliance

  • Experienced crew

  • Good reviews on platforms like Google, TripAdvisor, or diving forums

✅ Book Early

Charters often fill up fast, especially during weekends and holidays. Book in advance and be ready to share your certification level and needs for your charter. Don't be afraid to ask the dive charter about alternate destinations that suit your certification levels.

✅ Plan your Dive

  • Begin the planning stages of your dive by reading the charter’s website and FAQ

  • When in doubt, Confirm what’s included

  • Pack and Test your personal gear beforehand

  • Request rental gear ahead of time

  • Don't have a dive buddy? Don’t be afraid to ask the charter if they are comfortable with you coming alone and buddying up with other solo divers. We always encourage you to check with the Captain ahead of time, so she can pair you with another solo divers.

🎒 What to Bring on the Boat

Here’s a packing checklist for a successful and comfortable dive day:

✅ Dive Gear ;)

✅ In cold water, environments, be sure to bring a sweatshirt or jacket so you can warm up between dives

✅ Quick-dry Towel

✅ Reef-safe Sunscreen

✅ Sunglasses & Hat

✅ Water Bottle & Light Snacks (if not included like on the Marissa)

✅ Dive light

✅ Certification Card & Dive Log (if applicable)

Bonus!

✅ Waterproof Camera (or housing for your phone)

Pro Tip: Double-check if tanks and weights are provided. Most charters include them, but not all.

🚤 What to Expect Onboard

Arrival & Check-In

Arrive at the agreed upon time according to your dive charters instructions for check in, fill out any digital waivers ahead of time and any physical paperwork the day of, and meet the crew. You’ll receive a safety briefing that covers the boat layout, emergency procedures, and (once at the site) dive site details.

En Route to the Dive Site

Depending on the location, boat rides can range from 10 minutes to over an hour. Use this time to:

  • Check your gear

  • Get suited up

  • Chat with your fellow divers

  • Check your gear (yep, said that twice)

  • Breathe in the saltly sea air and relax!

Gearing up & Getting in

You’ll typically dive with a buddy or hire a guide. Many operators (like Marissa Dive Charters) account for extra “don’t rush” time and support to help you feel prepared and ready. The best dives are the ones that start with a calming breath. Keep in mind that all charters have a time they are expected back at the dock, if you find that you are the last person on the boat for longer than 15 minutes, ask the Captain how much dive time you have left.

🤿 Safety First: Key Practices to Follow

  • Buddy Up: Dive with a buddy and communicate your plan , Dive gear, and turn around point

  • Stay Within Limits: choose dives that you are trained and certified for

  • Monitor Air: Know your air consumption and plan accordingly

  • Ascend Slowly: Follow safe ascent rates and complete all safety stops and required deco

  • Ask Questions: Crew and other divers are happy to help—don't be shy!

Safety is the foundation of a good dive. A calm diver is a happy diver.

🍽️ After the Dive

Post-dive time is for recovery and camaraderie. Enjoy snacks or meals provided by the crew, share dive stories, identify wildlife and look over any underwater photos.

If multiple dives are planned, you'll have a surface interval to rest, hydrate, and prepare for your next immersion.

🌊 The Impact of Your First Dive

Your first dive charter can be the start of a lifelong connection to the ocean. Many new divers go on to:

  • Pursue advanced certifications

  • Join local dive communities

  • Volunteer for marine conservation or underwater cleanups

At Marissa Dive Charters, we love introducing new divers to the magic of the Pacific. Whether you’re just getting your fins wet or ready for deeper adventures, we’re here to help you feel safe, supported, and inspired.

✨ Final Thoughts

Your first dive charter isn’t just a boat trip—it’s the gateway to a new underwater world. With the right prep, the right operator, and the right mindset, you’ll create memories that last a lifetime.

So take a deep breath, gear up, and dive in. Your next great adventure is just beneath the surface.
